Yet here we are right after Labor Day, contemplating another rash of tragedies in high school football. With those tragedies come another set of well-meaning people and communities wondering what, if anything, they could have done to prevent it.
Coaches push them to excel. They study playbooks, perfecting every move. Each touchdown fuels their passion. Injuries test their determination. Fans cheer, filling the stands with excitement. They learn to overcome setbacks. Their dedication builds lasting confidence and perseverance.
After three weeks of the season, only two No. 1 ranked teams in the Alabama Sports Writers Association prep football rankings received all 18 first-place votes. Reigning 7A champ Central-Phenix City continues to be a unanimous choice in its classification, while Jackson also received all the No. 1 votes in Class 4A.
“We probably have to learn how to be more consistent in a long season. To be in the top four, it has to be on a consistent basis. We’ve got Burnley in midweek – they’re fighting for their lives so we know it’ll be a tough one.”

Gainer was playing defensive back when he collapsed, Tim Davis, the athletic director and assistant principal for Liberty County High School, where the game was being played, told Northwest Florida Daily News.
The ASWA prep committee's primary responsibilities include conducting regular top-10 rankings of a variety of high school sports, and select all-state teams in those sports as well. The committee will determine the winner of a variety of annual awards including the annual Mr. Football winner, and the Jimmy Smothers Courage Award.
